What is a computer virus?
A computer virus is a self-copying software program that loads itself onto your computer without your
consent or knowledge. It spreads by attaching to other software or files and copies itself when the infected
software or file is executed or launched.
What is a virus hoax?
Virus hoax e-mail messages are common. These messages warn you about viruses and other malicious
threats that do NOT in fact exist. However, those who create authentic viruses use known hoaxes to their
advantage. So, you should scan these messages for viruses.
Seven preventative measures
1. Most important, install antivirus software, run it weekly and stay current on antivirus software updates.

3. Be cautious when opening e-mail attachments.
4. Be cautious when downloading or installing software.
5. Purchase software from trusted sources.
6. Back up your data frequently.
7. Install a firewall.
Eight symptoms of viruses
To determine if your PC is infected, you must run antivirus software. However, there are a few common
symptoms that indicate your system might be infected:
1. Your PC runs more slowly than usual.
2. Your PC locks up often.
3. Your PC restarts on its own and then doesn't run normally.
4. Applications don't work properly.
5. There are unexpected changes in the content of your files.
6. Critical files are deleted.
7. There are unusual error messages.
8. There are distorted menus and dialog boxes.
